Sanjuriu is a system of traditional martial arts, consisting of Karate Jutsu, Jujutsu, Aikijutsu, Iaijutsu, Kenjutsu, Bojutsu, and Saijutsu, to name just a few components. We are unique in that we contain all of the above (and more) in one
system.

There are many different schools of martial arts available
to the prospective student today. Without a background in
martial arts many people will find it difficult to figure out the
differences between the schools and how to pick the right
school to fit their goals; so here we will discuss these
differences and try to determine if Sanjuriu is the right
school for you.

There are generally three over arcing methodologies
of training in the martial arts:
                Military, Civilian and Sport based

A Military based martial art is concerned with combat
in a battlefield setting. In this setting the combatants use
weaponry capable of killing large numbers of enemies,
machine guns and missiles are examples from modern
warfare, spears and naginata are examples from feudal
Japanese warfare. The students of a Military based
martial art focus on using weapons. They are trained to
fight with armor on and will be dealing with enemies
equipped in like manner. In this realm of warfare the potential
for death is high and the soldier must have a strong mental bearing to face the psychological and physical abuse of battle.

A Civilian based martial art is focused on teaching techniques designed for use by civilians. The situations that these types of martial arts are dealing with are quite different from the military based situations. Instead of a battlefield the civilian is oftentimes in an urban area, rather then having weapons of war the civilian is generally unarmed. Because of this these arts focus on unarmed self defense. The civilian may encounter weapons like knives and handguns, but the likelihood of injury leading to death is greatly reduced from the battlefield situation that soldiers face.

A Sport based martial art is focused on teaching students how to excel in a sport environment, how to win tournaments and other competitions. In these types of systems the students prepare to face challenges based on specific rules. In modern times a death occurring in one of these competitions is virtually unheard of. The modern Sport based martial art doesn’t teach techniques that are life threatening, keeping the safety of the opponent in mind. The students prepare a mental state geared more for performing in front of judges and a crowd then facing a mugger attacking from behind in a dark parking lot.

Sanjuriu is a system of Japanese and Okinawan martial arts that teaches Civilian and Military based techniques. We teach nothing geared towards sport; our focus is centered on real world applications. Students in our school initially spend much of their time learning how to defend against attacks that are common in a civilian setting. As students progress they are introduced to Nito Shin So Ryu, our military system. Nito Shin So Ryu is a samurai school, teaching techniques and weaponry that were prevalent in feudal Japanese warfare.

Our self-defense system offers 2 concentration areas for the beginning student depending on their interest:

Jujutsu: Throwing techniques concentration
Karate Jutsu: Striking techniques concentration

Despite this initial division, students in both concentrations will be gradually learning content from the other on an ongoing basis. Upon completion of the foundational level of First Menkyo (Licensed Black Belt Instructor) students will have gained a complete understanding of the content of both concentrations and the use of the basic weapons of Nito Shin So Ryu.

Our Youth and Family Classes are Jujutsu classes, our Women’s self defense classes are a mix of Karate and Jujutsu. Our Weapons class is a Nito Shin So Ryu class and our Newaza class is a subset of the Jujutsu class. Click here for the complete Sanjuriu Class Listing.

Students may take both approaches at the same time if they are 12 or older.  Those under 12 will start with Jujutsu. Once a student obtains a First Menkyo in either approach (half of the complete instructors license), they will then study to obtain a First Menkyo in the other.

Sanjuriu is a Kata based System. We teach traditional Karate kata, Jujutsu kata, and Weapons kata. Kata are collections of prearranged movements. Kata practice enables the martial artist to internalize self defense movements such that overtime they become unconscious and natural. In this manner students are prepared for the physical and mental stress of a violent situation. We teach self defense based on kata: our students do not learn kata for aerobic exercise or stance practice, rather all of our techniques are represented in the kata. Katas are the traditional method of training for all martial arts, they are a transmission of martial knowledge, and as such our system places emphasis on the self defense techniques that come out of the katas.

Does Sanjuriu teach any sort of eastern spirituality? No, Sanjuriu is a “jutsu” based school, in contrast to a “do” school. In the mainstream martial arts community, the term "do" is meant to indicate a sort of philosophical or spiritual essence. "Do" means "way," as in the "way of life" or a "way to harmony." "Jutsu" on the other hand means "art." Philosophically Jutsu is used to indicate a combatitive focus. "Karate Do" is the way of karate, a way that some proponents would argue that leads to the betterment of the individual as a whole, spiritually, physically and mentally. “Karate Jutsu” is the art of karate, a means of self defense, a method of strengthening the body and the mind to withstand a physical assault. Karate Jutsu makes no claim to better an individual in any spiritual sense.

Karate Do could be said to be a type of “self perfection” while Karate Jutsu is a method of “self preservation.”
